Salar de uyuni - the biggest "mirror" in the world

Soloncak Uulu (Spanish version Salar de Uyuni) - a dried salt lake in the south of the desert plain of Altiplano in Bolivia, at an altitude of about 3650 m above sea level. It has an area of 10,582 square kilometers and is the largest solonchak in the world. The main minerals are halite and gypsum.

The inner part is covered with a layer of common salt 2-8 m thick. During the rainy season, the solonchak is covered with a thin layer of water and turns into the largest "mirror" in the world.

In the middle of the boundless mirror space it seems as if on another planet or the end of the world. Due to its large size, flat surface and high albedo with a thin layer of water, and minimal deviation of altitude, the Uyuni solonchak is an ideal tool for testing and calibrating remote sensing instruments on orbiting satellites.
