Small interiors can deliver a lot of trouble with their design. An incorrectly selected color will provoke claustrophobic attacks, excess furniture will create a sense of chaos, and an inappropriate design may prove too intrusive.

Small interiors require creativity from their owners

Professional designers become illusions in some way when it becomes necessary to solve similar problems. Taking on their favorite techniques, you yourself can make a spectacular stunt, forcing everyone to believe that the room in your house - very modest in fact - has an enviable dimensions.

1 Do not use dark shades

Have you ever happened to be in rooms whose walls are painted in a dark color, where the carpet with furniture leads to gloomy thoughts? Is not it true that such premises seem to crush you, closing around the perimeter of impenetrable darkness? These are the properties of the dark palette, especially when it comes to compact spaces.

A small room will only be attractive when it seems more than it really is. Light decor makes the walls "retreat", filling the interior with air and space. First of all, you should look at the most delicate shades of green, blue and gray, or turn to a neutral gamut.

2 Do not be afraid of bright colors

Many people do not even consider the possibility of using saturated shades in the decor of compact rooms. Meanwhile, the deficit of square meters is an excellent occasion to experiment with bold colors.

Limit the palette to a few particularly favorite tones. Make yourself decide to include in the interior of effective floral designs, graphic prints, horizontal or vertical stripes. Horizontal lines will allow to visually expand the space, while the vertical lines will create the illusion of high ceilings.

Small interiors are more supportive for the presence of large-scale drawings, because duplicate small images make them sloppy and flat.

3 Do not overlook the scale and proportions

Remember the fairy tale about the three bears, in which the girl in the forest hut chose a suitable bed for herself? The first was great, the second was high, and only the third fit. Similarly, the furniture must match the dimensions of the room.

A giant sofa will occupy the entire space of a small living room, while too humble will look comical. The ideal option is a balanced combination of large elements with small ones.

Consider placing a high rack or sideboard against the wall. Low chairs with narrow armrests or without them will make an excellent combination with a comfortable sofa.

4 Do not make out the floor in contrasting color

The look of the person who first finds himself in the room involuntarily lingers on the floor, then quickly covers the walls until finally fixed on the ceiling. If all these surfaces are sustained in a single scale, the interior is perceived as a single whole, and the plane boundaries are not visualized. An illusion of space and openness is created, and this is exactly what we expect from small rooms.

5 Do not overload the interior

Chaos and mess are no better than dark walls, if we talk about the undesirable features of compact interiors.

Entering the room, filled with furniture, overloaded with decorative items and small details, you will inevitably feel the cramped space, its overwhelming energy and inconvenience. To keep it as open as possible, select some of the most expensive things in your heart and place them in strategically important places. Observing moderation, fill the shelves, but not low surfaces like coffee tables.

6 Do not Miscalculate with a Traffic Scheme

Properly selected furniture should also be arranged so that everyone was comfortable to move. This process will require you to have patience and courage in decision-making. Move the sofa and armchairs away from the wall - the interior will acquire a visual depth. The more free space remains in the room, the more spacious it will appear.

Do not cover the whole room with a carpet, but get a small carpet in the color of the floor covering and place on it a furniture group - a sitting area or a dining table with chairs.

7 Do not forget about lighting

Insufficient illumination turns a small room into a cave that causes claustrophobia attacks. Ideally, the room should be provided with three light sources, and then it will look spacious and filled with air.

If you can not place table lamps and floor lamps, ask for help from the sconce. And be sure to complement the image with mirrors that will not only reflect the light, but also visually expand the space due to the formation of perspective.

8 Do not make the décor of the window too complex

Excessively decorated windows inevitably overload the interior. Pompous curtains attract attention, instead of just acting as an accent. Framing the window should be laconic and delicate: it is better if it is combined with the decor of the walls, rather than contrasting.

9 Do not discount architectural details

The walls, devoid of decor, will not seem boring in the presence of stylish architectural elements. Interesting cladding and stuccoing, which we are accustomed to seeing in solid rooms, will give importance to a small room, complicating its interior. Moldings, skirting boards and beautiful panels will cope with this task magnificently.

10 Do not ignore the vertical space

After finishing the interior design and remaining satisfied with the result as a whole, you suddenly can realize that the room does not have enough storage space. But the walls exist not only to be decorated with paintings. Use the vertical space rationally: hang several shelves or install the built-in modules.
