The Chicago Company Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill (AS + GG) were officially announced as architects to develop a project beyond the skyscraper Kingdom Tower (Tower of the Kingdom), which should be built in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Originally the planned height of the tower was one mile (1 mile) and had a name Mile-High Tower. After testing the soil in 2008, the building was reduced, as architects doubted that the surface could withstand a building of this height. Now the planned height of the building will be one kilometer, which will eclipse 828 m Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, thus claiming the title of the tallest building in the world.
Kingdom Tower will be central and the first stage of the construction of Kingdom City area of 5.3 million meters2located along the Red Sea north of Jeddah, which is known as the traditional gateway to the sacred city of Mecca. The whole project was evaluated by the budget in $ 20 billion. The cost of the Kingdom Tower is estimated at about $ 1.2 billion, and the area is 530,000 m2.
Building will contain 59 elevators, 54 one-story and five two-story elevators, as well as 12 escalators. The fastest lifts in the world will move at a speed of 36 km / h in both directions. At the 157th floor level, it is planned to build Sky Terrace, something like balconies for penthouses, employees for walking and panoramic views.
